Liposuction
is a technique aimed primarily at reducing and making less prominent
localized areas of protuberant fat on the body, giving a new, sculpted
look to the shape.
This
can be done anywhere, from the area under the chin to the chest
and abdominal regions, as well as the flanks. It
is commonly done in the medial and lateral thigh regions,
as well as the knees. The technique is outpatient and done under
local anesthesia and IV sedation.
The
surgeon inserts a cannula through small incisions in the skin. At
the other end of the tube is a vacuum-pressure unit that suctions
off the fat.
The
current state of the art, using the tumescent technique,
has relatively minimal post operative pain, and relatively minor
black and blue discoloration. The effect of the suctioning, in general,
gives a long term recontouring, which in association with the proper
diet and regular exercise, can lead to long lasting enhancement
of the shape in the area of the body treated. A
snug
compression garment worn after surgery helps reduce swelling.
